Urban Legends Series: Bloody Mary

Bloody Mary 900x600 Urban Legends Series: Bloody Mary

“An urban legend that says that anyone who chants the words Bloody Mary three times in front of a mirror will summon a vengeful spirit. This spirit has been reported to do a variety of things to the person who summons her, including killing the person, scratching their eyes out, driving them mad or pulling them into the mirror with the spirit – generally referred to as the spirit of a woman or even a witch. This is an old legend, but in 1978 a folklorist named Janet Langlois published an essay on Bloody Mary, which led to the tale becoming a popular slumber party ritual done by girls as well as boys. No one knows the origins of the Bloody Mary legend; over the years, she has been rumored to be anything from a witch that was killed for practicing witchcraft to a modern-day woman killed in a car crash, depending on what part of the country you live in.”

In this session my model and I really wanted to bring to life the fear that this legend provided to children who had heard the stories!

Urban Legends Series: Killer in the Window

Killer In the Window 093web 900x600 Urban Legends Series: Killer in the Window

“A 15-year-old girl was babysitting her little sister while her parents went out to a party. She sent her sister off to bed around 9:30 while she stayed up to watch her favorite T.V. show.

She sat in her recliner with a blanket and watched until it went off at around 10:30 after it went off she turned around in her seat to face the big glass door and watch the snow fall. She sat there for about 5 minutes or so when she noticed a strange man walking toward the glass from outside. She sat there staring as he stared at her back. He started to pull a shiny object out from his coat. Thinking it was a knife she immediately pulled the covers over her head. After about 10 minutes she removed the covers and saw that he was gone. She then called 911 and they rushed over.

They examined outside for any footprints in the snow, but there were none to be found. Two cops walked into her house to tell her the bad news and they noticed a trail of big wet footprints leading up to the chair where she was sitting.

The cops came to their conclusion and immediately told the girl she was very lucky because the man she saw staring at her was not standing outside, but he was standing behind her and what she saw was his reflection.”

 Urban Legends Series: Evil Dopplegangers
mid 19th century: from German, literally ‘double-goer.’

Legend has it, that meeting your doppelganger is a sign of trouble to come. They usually represent an oncoming illness, death or other tragedy.

In this session, my lovely model Lizzy and I worked together to bring about the eery feeling one might encounter when meeting their “double”.

Urban Legends Series: The Vanishing Hitchhiker

Fog Snow 056 1 900x600 Urban Legends Series: The Vanishing Hitchhiker

You’ve heard the stories… I grew up on them. My trips home from the library were filled with books such as Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (affiliate link), I was obsessed with Stephen King books and movies, and also looked forward to watching Unsolved Mysteries every chance I got. Anything scary or creepy has always fascinated me, so earlier this year I set out to create a series of photoshoots to capture some of my favorite urban legends from my youth. I worked with some amazing models for this project and it was a lot of fun trying to see how far I could push my creative boundaries while bringing these stories to life… I even discovered that listening to my favorite Horror podcast on itunes really helped to get me in the mood for creating these types of images (The NoSleep Podcast for those who are interested!)
